Four Corners win Golden Walkley for live export story

Four Corners win Golden Walkley for live export story

28 November 2011 Have your say

There's no doubt that Animals Australia's investigation into the treatment of cattle exported to Indonesia was one of the stories of the year. At the 2011 Walkley Awards, Four Corners were awarded the most prized honour of the night, the 2011 Golden Walkley, for their report "A Bloody Business", which exposed this shocking story to the Australian public.

In announcing the award, the Walkley Foundation said:

Four Corners held up an unflinching mirror to Australia’s live export trade and exposed levels of cruelty that shocked the nation.

“A bloody business” tackled an intensely difficult and emotion-charged subject with rigour, intelligence, thoughtfulness and context. Many viewers were repulsed and angered, and the story ignited a national debate about a long-standing failure of both the Australian government and the livestock industry to ensure the humane slaughter of animals it exported.

Footage shot by the animal activist group Animals Australia showed cattle being eye gouged and whipped, and dying slowly after their throats were improperly slit.

The story and its repercussions had an enormous impact on the Gillard government, which scrambled to be seen to be doing something in a bid to staunch the fierce criticism of its previous failure to act.

Congratulations to Four Corners, for this much deserved honour. If you missed this hard-hitting story, you can still watch it on the Four Corners website.

Well done, Animals Australia and Four Corners for exposing this shameful abuse.  Lyn White is an Angel.

Please keep hounding politicians and don't give up on ending Live Export.  We are all these poor animals have.
Ruth Weston: Well done Lyn Saturday, 3 December 2011 at 8:27pm
Well done to 4 corners, Sarah Ferguson and particularly Lyn White - without your initial footage this program would never have been made.  I admire your courage in the face of such cruelty.

Hope 4 corners will do a follow up at some stage but with positive improvements in place.

Now we need to keep up the pressure to get mandatory stunning and ultimately an end to this absolutely inhumane, atrocious trade.

Well done again 4 corners, Lyn White and Bidda Jones.  Hope you all great a break from the horrors.

Dina: slaughter of pigs in Aus. Saturday, 3 December 2011 at 7:29am
Lyn white and these brave journalists are showing the people what is happening daily to these defenseless animals!
IS THERE NOT ONE IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION WHO WILL TAKE THE CAUSE TO THE NEXT STEP!!!!!
I cannot read the article about the pigs as I I will be depressed and angry for weeks but are the person/people involved in the cruelty going to be prosecuted? I dare not ask - are they of a certain Culture who believe pigs are dirty creatures and animals in general are products?
I believe a system by a Dr Temple Grandin? is supposed to be the most humane and stress free way of slaughter - If so why cannot that be enforced worldwide?  I pray for all the pigs which are being slaughtered for Xmas Hams. (No hams at my place)

Cor: A thoroughly well deserved award. Wednesday, 30 November 2011 at 1:55am
I've been watching 4 Corners ever since I was a kid when we first got TV reception (in black and white) back in 1974 in our small Northern Territory town and along with it our first and only TV channel, the ABC. Throughout the years 4 Corners has always produced fair, unflinching reports of the highest quality that have time and again through the years been ground breaking and on a number of occasions, moved the nation. Their report "A Bloody Business" is the latest distinction in this exceptional programs reporting history. Its exposure of this countries long hidden dirty secret atrocities of the Live Export Trade has given Australians the truth, and the truth has moved me (as I know it has others) to do whatever I can to see this inexcusable trade in cruelty abolished.

For all that you have done, thank you 4 Corners, Sarah Ferguson, Lyn White, Animals Australia and Bidda Jones and the RSPCA. A thoroughly well deserved award. CONGRATULATIONS.
Trisha: Golden Walkley - maybe one day (not yet) we can sing this with pride: Tuesday, 29 November 2011 at 10:11pm
Australian National Anthem
"Advance Australia Fair"
words and music composed by
Peter Dodds McCormick
proclaimed Australia's National Anthem
by the Governor - General
 on 19th April 1984

Australians all let us rejoice
For we are young and free
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea:
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page let every stage
Advance Australia fair,
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands,
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.

Maggie Hamill: Thankyou Tuesday, 29 November 2011 at 9:52pm
The night the show aired I really thought ' will I watch, won't I watch" and I thought if these fantastic people had the nerve to go into these revolting places, then I should at least watch.  I started crying immediately, but then the tears dried up and it was just anger I felt.
Good on everyone that helped get this to the Australian public.  I am sorry you had to make a doco like this, but am bloody amazed you all did it.  Thankyou.

Well done 4 Corners and AA for exposing the cruelty that is rampant within this revolting trade. How awful it must have been filming such unspeakable brutality. Thankfully, Lyn White and others did speak up for our animals and showed the world the shocking reality of the live export trade.  And months later, this issue is still alive. Fantastic result for all concerned.  BAN LIVE EXPORTS.

I was delighted to hear that 4Corners had won this award. Animals Australia, Lyn White and crew, Sarah Ferguson and crew, you did an amazing job to expose the vile cruelty that exists in Live Export and the subsequent treatment of livestock. It is so weird that people in the industry knew of these horrors and then denied any such knowledge. They condone the treatment then distance themselves from it when it looks them in the eye. Such cowardly, dishonest behaviour needs to be shown to the world. And that is what 4Corners and Animals Australia have done. Well done and let's keep on exposing people until they stop.
boyd: stop live exports Tuesday, 29 November 2011 at 11:23am
GOOD ON YOU 4 CORNERS AND ANIMALS AUSTRALIA  wish i had the guts to do something like that and try to help all the poor animals who are suffering
Kris: Congratulations Monday, 28 November 2011 at 3:51pm
Congratulations to all involved in this story.  It is excellent to see that these people, persecuted within the enquiry alongside Lyn White and Animals Australia, have received this kudos for what is possibly the biggest industry shake-up that I've seen in my lifetime.  The story was well aimed and gave Australians a direct view into an industry that has kept itself hidden behind lies and marketing for too long.  This country is better than this.  We are not a people that will allow it to continue.  Social Media will keep the issue alive and we will keep talking and acting until we see an end.
Thank you, thank you, to all involved in this.  A well-deserved award.  You are my heroes.
