NSW Upper House passes free-range egg labelling bill

NSW Upper House passes free-range egg labelling bill

21 October 2011 Have your say

After two days of debate, the NSW Upper House today passed the Greens' Truth in Labelling (Free-range eggs) Bill that will impose labelling requirements and legally enforceable standards for free-range eggs sold in NSW if also passed in the Lower House.

The bill, which was watered down by Labor amendments, was passed with support from the Greens, Labor and the Shooters and Fishers party. Only the NSW Liberal Government opposed it.

If passed in the Lower House, this bill will see the stocking density of free range hens capped at 1,500 per hectare. This would be a serious blow to the Australian Egg Corporation's plan to allow 'free range farmers' to keep 20,000 hens per hectare. The bill will also ensure that free range hens have access to the outdoor range from a much earlier age that that proposed by the industry body.

Our thanks go to all supporters who have taken action to protect free range laying hens from being subjected to factory farming like conditions. Your correspondence ensured NSW MLC's knew how they could best represent the public. We will soon need your support again to ensure the bill is passed in the Lower House and becomes law.

But if you want to do more to protect laying hens from cruelty NOW, please find some ideas below:

  1. Write to Australia's Ministers for Agriculture to urge them to review the poultry code and ban the battery cage.
  2. Sadly the living conditions afforded to hens are only half the story. Each year 12 million day-old male chicks hatched in egg industry are gassed to death or ground up alive — simply because they will never grow up to lay eggs. This is one of the key reasons many caring consumers are reducing the number of eggs in their diet and opting for egg free recipes.

Annette Shelford: Eggscellent Outcome! Tuesday, 13 March 2012 at 10:17pm
Another one investigated and fined ! I've info-shared on Twitter the latest ACCC investigation outcome of 'caged' eggs being sold as 'free-range' as follows:
Eggscellent!! See ACCC's action of 'caged' eggs sold as 'free-range' Yr $, yr choice, yr chookwelfare karma  http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/1037910/fromItemId/2332 pls RT :)

Keep up the pressure! ACCC has openly acknowledged consumer laws tor AUS consumers to raise concerns, and although ACCC outcome of Steggles 'misleading branding' investigation is pending, people-power = consumer $ and voting choices ...  from small beginnings, great things can happen. Again, well done AA and support network/advocates/members - the Voiceless are no longer the unseen forgotten.  Cheers!

I was brought up on a farm and when chickens lay eggs they really squawk. Our  knowledge of laying hens isn't very good.Does it hurt them sometimes. It certainly hurts to give birth.Does it take a chicken 30 hours before they lay an egg.My cat wants some food.i will come back after. Can you let me know.Thanks.
Kerry Baker: Labelling Saturday, 5 November 2011 at 10:24am
I applaud the NSW Govt for getting this far with the free-range labeling legislation. It will only be through consumer awareness that cruelty towards all living creatures will end.

Val: To Hazel Wednesday, 26 October 2011 at 6:00pm

Bev Maunsel: The wrong animals are in cages! Tuesday, 25 October 2011 at 7:32pm
All those who vote to continue cruelty to animals in all forms, should
be the ones locked in cages
David Longford: No free range at Woolies Tuesday, 25 October 2011 at 11:47am
Woolworths and Coles should be ashamed the only free range eggs they stock are non genuine free range, as mentioned on the 7.30 report which someone posted above, a good watch, proof that big business only care about dollars not what consumers really want. They are charging more for a dozen supposedly free range eggs than the fruit shops and butchers that are selling genuine free range eggs. Another reason I buy the bare minimum at Woolies and all my fresh food from fruit shops and butchers

Roger Brown: Factory Hens Tuesday, 25 October 2011 at 11:23am
Why is it only the Greens Party that take up the plight of voiceless/ vote-less  animals and not the 2 big business parties  ?  People need to vote 1 Greens at the next election , so that animals can be helped and STOP buying cage eggs.

Leisa Preen: Factory Farming Sunday, 23 October 2011 at 7:03pm
I am sometimes quite ashamed to be classified as a human being.
How can we be utterly so cruel and  disrespecting to another
species which share this beautiful planet.   For heaven's sake - let
them please have a more pleasant life - even if it will be only short.
Kay Sutton: How Dare You Speak for All of US Sunday, 23 October 2011 at 3:49pm
Hey you selfish Politicians!  Stand up and voice your support to improve the conditions of those animals that can not speak for themselves.  We always hear you loud and clear when you want a pay rise or more 'benefits'.
These chickens are going to die to feed us - at least give them a decent short life without suffering!!
Cherie Imlah: battery hens and other cruelties Sunday, 23 October 2011 at 12:25pm
Every day I'm subject to learning about other animal cruelties, and the battery farming, de-beaking and the mincing up of day old male chickens is beyond cruelty, it's deliberate savagery one would expect from uncivilised beings, hardly human.
Merinda: Hen accommodation Sunday, 23 October 2011 at 10:50am
Before the State Government says that it is OK to have 20,000 phec they should be required to live in their bathroom for a month.  All food is passed to them - they've got toilet facilities - they may not exit that room for 31 days.  No clean clothing is allowed, but they can shower (which is more than the battery hen (inside or outside) has.

I think I'm being a bit generous in allowing the politician to have so much space.  Our battery chickens have a lot less.
