Indonesian live export to decline; cruelty to continue

Indonesian live export to decline; cruelty to continue

16 December 2011 Have your say

News reports that the Indonesian Government has committed to banning all live cattle imports from Australia within a few years points to the volatility of the live export trade — but it signals little reprieve for animals.

Australia's live export industry is already increasing the number of animals sent into other markets including the Middle East, Egypt and Turkey — where, like Indonesia, animals are permitted to be brutally slaughtered while fully conscious.

The horrendous practices documented inside Indonesian slaughterhouses by Animals Australia earlier this year sparked an enormous public outcry calling for an end to the live export trade. For the first time, the Australian public saw a glimpse of hidden practices that were known to the live export industry for more than a decade.

In 2011 Animals Australia also conducted an investigation in Turkey, showing horrific routine slaughter practices. Despite this, animals continue to be sent to this destination. The live export industry continues to expand their trade into new markets with the full knowledge that the routine slaughter practices in importing countries fall well below the standards expected by the Australian community.

Following the public backlash after cruelty to Australian cattle was exposed in Indonesia, the Gillard Government issued new rules for live export permits, which are being rolled out to all markets over the next 12 months. These new rules are based on 'International' (OIE) standards, which do not require animals to be stunned before slaughter. Despite pressure from the Australian public, animal welfare groups, and many of from within their own party, the Labor Government has rejected calls to mandate stunning for animals exported live from Australia.

As a result, millions of cattle and sheep raised for the live export trade will not only still face the gruelling sea voyage to foreign countries, those who survive the journey will still risk a brutal slaughter without the mercy of stunning in overseas abattoirs.

Indonesia's decision to dramatically reduce cattle imports from Australia demonstrates that this is a high risk industry not only for animals, but for those rural communities that have become too economically reliant upon it. The only way that animals can be protected from the cruelty of live export is for the Australian Government to ban it.

TAKE ACTION — IN 30 SECONDS

Every day that live animal export is allowed to continue, more animals face the cruelty of treacherous journeys on the open oceans and a terrifying death that is guaranteed neither quick nor painless. Please click here to send an instant message to your MP and State Senators to urge them to use their power to end the Government's support for the inherently cruel live animal export trade.

In Paris until the 21st of May Chief Veterinary Officers will be meeting to discuss Animals In Transport. Can you please sign some signatures to help the OIE. Can you please go to Compassion In World Farming to do this as the email is already written. Animals were not looked after properly on The Gracia Del Mar. They need over 1,000 signatures. Thanks, Val.
Val:: Rainbow Bridge Thursday, 17 May 2012 at 6:29pm
Just this side of heaven, is a place called Rainbow Bridge...  When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. Alll the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor, those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and time gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The Bright Eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again carress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. THEN YOU CROSS RAINBOW BRIDGE TOGETHER... I hope this helps you Boyd as i know you miss MAX.
Val:: 24,000 Cattle A Year Processed Tuesday, 15 May 2012 at 9:18pm
I have just read where 24,000 cattle a year are processsed (slaughtered) in Indonesia a year and now the farmers are asking for compensation. I will read more later but this is far too many animals being cruelly slaughtered in an overseas country. It's certainly "A Bloody Business."
Val:: Get Up Monday, 30 April 2012 at 1:01pm
I have read the article again and Get Up has aplogised to Chris Harcher about the banning of live exports. Get Up are apparently not currently trying to ban live exports. I get confused with all this news sometimes but you can read it in the herald sun i think.
Val:: Ban Live Exports Monday, 30 April 2012 at 12:25pm
I have just read on my computer where Chris Hatcher, the N.S.W. Resources and Energy Minister, warns Get Up is trying to ban live exports. He warns that the ant i- coal seam gas group will turn on farmers. You can read this at smh.com.au   I hope this is correct as people are worrying about live exports .

Paula T: BLOODY BUSINESS AWARD Monday, 16 April 2012 at 1:10pm
ABC's  *A BLOODY BUSINESS* received an Award at the Logies last night....  This is really good   All of Australia should know the truth by now.... I was a bit disapointed with the speech given by (forgot her name, sorry) she did not mention 1 word about the little horrible footage that was shown to the audience only saying sorry you all had to witness that ???????? & the rest of her speech was directed at special guests on her table, sons of a journalist that sadly lost his life, which was very nice but nothing about the live export cruelty.... nothing at all..... All the awards & success... STILL THE CRUELTY CONTINUES....  Pissed Off Really

I have received an email from the Belmont Council and they will have to take poor Monty the Red- Tailed- Cockatoo's case to court as the council received a complaint about him. If you can just write to my council in Belmont City, Perth, W.A. to try to help Monty as he will be taken from his parents the Townends. My letter below has the places you can contact, thanks, Val. I don't know what else to do but write emails and ring and complain.
Val:: Tragedy Of The Gracia Del Mar Thursday, 12 April 2012 at 8:35pm
I have just read on Compassion in World Farming about the cattle on the Gracia Del Mar. There are 3,600 alive as some others have died too out of the 5,000 or so cattle that were sent from Brazil. The remaining cattle sailed to Djibouti in East Africa at the end of the Red Sea for fattening. Then the cattle will be savagely killed in Safaga where undercover cameras have found the methods used there are terribly cruel. So these poor animals have sailed from Brazil, across the Atlantic, The Meditteranean Sea, The Suez Canal and then the Red Sea to Egyypt where they will finally die. This is a cruel horrible world that is why i won't eat red meat. You can go to Compassion to read about this as i may have made some mistakes about the countries but there is no good news about these poor animals.
