Lyn White named 'NewsMaker of the Year'

Lyn White named 'NewsMaker of the Year'

1 January 2012 Have your say

ABC NewsRadio has named Lyn White, Animals Australia Campaign Director and Investigator, 'NewsMaker of the Year' for her groundbreaking investigative work exposing cruelty to animals in 2011.

The award comes following an unprecedented year in animal advocacy. In May 2011, shocking footage obtained by Lyn of Australian animals being brutalised in Indonesia aired on the Gold Walkley award winning Four Corners story, 'A Bloody Business'. For the next five months, some 40,000 media stories followed, sparking massive public opposition to the live export trade, and awakening the consciences of a nation to the plight of animals. As one senior rural reporter put it, animal welfare is now 'the new black'.

The 'overwhelming win', as voted by ABC NewsRadio listeners, reflects the growing public awareness and concern for animal welfare across the country. Importantly, this recognition will further encourage the Australian media to report on more stories that have the potential to help expose cruelty to animals in 2012.

Listen to the announcement made live on radio on New Year's morning:

This latest endorsement of Lyn's work comes after she was voted 'Person of the Year' by readers of the online news publication Crikey. Lyn has also been named one of Victoria's 100 most influential people of 2011 by The Age, as well as being a state finalist for the 2012 Australian of the Year.

Lyn extends a heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported Animals Australia's work — not least of all our members and donors — without whom the milestones we were able to achieve on behalf of animals in 2011 would never have been possible.

Join us for an evening with Lyn White

In February/March 2012, you are invited to share in Lyn's extraordinary experience and journey into animal protection first hand. We look forward to meeting many of our treasured supporters in person as Lyn travels across the country for an inspiring speaking tour.  For dates and cities, please click here.

Firstly, congratulations on your well deserved accolade. I thank you and all your team from the bottom of my heart for fighting for these defenseless animals and for having the courage to never give up and expose the barbaric tortures these beautiful creatures endure before ending up in plastic packaged coffins.  You are a guardian angel to the animal kingdom and I truly believe that the awareness you've raised will help people to take a stand against these atrocites.  Thank you for being a light for all these animals in their darkness. Lyn White and Team, I wanted to express my gratitude on behalf of the Animals you have rescued. I believe you are a person full of compassion, somebody who cares for the welfare of the creatures on this earth and I support your ambitions. Without your help I believe many animals could have been exposed to abuse and cruelty and that you have done animals all around Australia a favor by giving them the voice they don't have. Continue your much valued work and good luck!

Gillian Stroud: Inspiring work Sunday, 15 January 2012 at 11:40pm
I am primarily concerned with conservation issues but am very pleased by Lyn's achievements because cruelty to domestic livestock results from the same selfish lack of care that causes widespread environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity.

diane.firth: animal welfare Saturday, 14 January 2012 at 11:26am
I am so happy that at last some real change is happening to stamp out the inhumane and abominable tratment of many animals. Some of the practices have been completely unknown to me and made me aware that in Australia there is a vast amount of people who want change and will not stop until these changes are implemented. I congratulate Lyn and the way she and her team have worked  on behalf of the animals. We are with you.
Max Hall: Congratulation from England Saturday, 14 January 2012 at 10:28am
